The real cost

What an online loan really costs

Online loans are fast, but they are the most expensive way to borrow in Sri Lanka, and the shorter the loan, the higher the rate: a 10-day loan costs about 2.2–2.3% a day, which is over 800% a year. If you can wait a few days, a bank personal loan or a gold loan costs far less.

What "0% first loan" actually means. It is a promotion for new customers only. From your second loan the maximum APR applies. Check the total repayable amount before you borrow.

How to tell a genuine online lender from a scam

Four checks to make before you give anyone your NIC or bank details.

  1. Check who the lender is

A genuine lender publishes its company name, registration number and address. Our lender reviews list them.

  2. Never pay a fee up front

Be wary of anyone who asks for a "processing fee" before the loan is paid out.

  3. Read the total cost

Check the total you will repay and the late-payment charges before you accept.

  4. Protect your phone data

Avoid loan apps that ask for access to your contacts or photos.

Frequently asked questions

Online loans in Sri Lanka: what you need to know

Is LoanLanka a lender?

No. LoanLanka is a free service that helps you choose an online loan. The loan itself comes from a partner lender — Monigo.lk, CashX.lk, LoanPlus.lk or OnCredit.lk — and you complete the application on their site. We may receive a referral fee from the lender. It does not change what you pay.

How do I apply for an online loan in Sri Lanka?

Choose your amount and repayment period, pick a lender, and complete the lender’s online application. Have your NIC, bank statements and a selfie ready. Before you apply, compare the APR and the total repayable on LoanLanka.com.

How fast will I get the money?

The lender makes the decision. Most lenders give a decision within anywhere from ten minutes to one working day during service hours, and transfer the money to your bank account after approval.

How much can I borrow?

Our partner lenders lend from Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 300,000. Monigo.lk lends Rs. 3,000–150,000 over 91–180 days. CashX.lk and LoanPlus.lk lend Rs. 5,000–300,000 over 5–30 days, and OnCredit.lk lends Rs. 2,000–150,000 for up to 30 days.

Why is the APR on Sri Lankan online loans so high?

APR (Annual Percentage Rate) converts the loan cost to a yearly rate. Online loans are short-term, so the APR appears high: a 45% fee over 91 days equals 190% APR. The actual fee you pay is lower than the APR figure, but APR is the standard international way to compare loans.

What is the difference between an online loan and a bank loan?

Online loans: from 190% APR on a three-month loan to over 800% a year on a 10-day loan, easy application, fast disbursement. Bank personal loans: APR 15–25%, more documentation, 5–14 days to process. Online loans suit urgent short-term needs; bank loans suit planned, longer-term borrowing.

Can I get an online loan with a bad CRIB record?

Some online lenders are more flexible than banks, but your credit history is still considered. It is worth checking your CRIB report before you apply.

Can I repay an online loan early?

Most lenders allow early repayment, though some charge for it. Check the lender’s terms and conditions before you accept the loan.

Do online lenders in Sri Lanka need a CBSL licence?

In Sri Lanka, a moneylender that does not accept deposits is not required to hold a CBSL licence. Online lenders therefore operate outside the CBSL regulatory framework, and the consumer protections and interest rate ceilings that apply to banks and licensed finance companies do not apply. Borrow only what you can comfortably repay.
