What is an online loan?
An online loan is short-term credit you apply for over the internet without visiting a branch. Usually you need only your NIC and a bank account — no guarantor and no income certificate.
Approval takes minutes and money goes straight to your bank account. The price of that convenience is a very high interest rate.
Who can apply
- Aged 20–60
- Sri Lankan citizen with a valid NIC
- Stable monthly income
- Active Sri Lankan bank account
- Active mobile number
Before you borrow
- Look at the total repayable, not the headline rate.
- Check who the lender actually is — a registered company with a published address and phone number. Note that these online lenders are not CBSL-licensed.
- Find the late fees before you need them.
- Consider a bank loan — if you can wait, a bank personal loan costs far less.
- Check your CRIB report — credit history affects approval.
Who regulates these loans?
The online lenders listed on this site are not licensed by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka. Under the current framework, an entity that lends without accepting deposits is not required to hold a CBSL licence.
In practice this means the interest rate ceilings that apply to banks and licensed finance companies do not apply here. It is why a credit card is capped at 28% a year while an online loan can lawfully charge up to 190%.
These lenders may well be registered Sri Lankan companies — but company registration and a CBSL licence are not the same thing.
